Travel theme: Edge

Sailing up to the glacier’s edge in Glacier Bay, Alaska on the elegant SS Arcadia, proud member of the P & O fleet, sadly no longer with us.

Arcadia entered Glacier Bay on June 1st 1970 and was the largest ship ever to have sailed in these waters on this first Alaskan Cruise.  Here is the entry in the diary I kept during that remarkable summer, a summer that still remains fresh in my memory:

“Monday 1st of June: The climax to the whole cruise – Glacier Bay. How to describe the beauty of this awe inspiring scene. We felt we had arrived at the end of the world. Nothing but these magnificent mountain peaks, the silence and us. Slowly we moved round the bay exploring its hidden most channels, gliding up to the glacial faces, blasting the ship’s horn in the hope that we might produce an icefall – with no result other than the echo reverberating about us for a full minute. We saw seals playfully swimming beside us. I think there was no one who wasn’t moved by the sight. The sheer unexplored natural beauty that surrounded us is something we shall never forget.”

A little technical information about the images, which are from the Kodachrome slides I took using my first SLR camera, a Pentax Spotmatic. The slides, and there are many of them, remain as pristine today as the day they were developed in 1970. I scanned them into my laptop using an Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner and then processed them using Photoshop Elements.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dialogue

Dialogue iv

The dialogue between the photograph and the painting as it changes continues until that moment when the conversation ends and the painting is considered finished. The two photographs were taken at the magical Castello di Reschio in Umbria and the paintings completed in my studio back home. I have previously posted the different stages of the second painting, entitled Cypress Alleyway, in response to a previous WPC: Layers, for those of you who would like to have a “virtual” studio visit.

Vincent’s Room

Vincent's Room i

Can there be a more iconic room than Vincent Van Gogh’s bedroom at the Saint-Paul Asylum, Saint-Remy, France where Van Gogh entered voluntarily as a patient on May 8, 1889 and remained until May the following year. During this time he painted the gardens, with their wheat fields, olives groves, irises and sunflowers, all of which he could see from his bedroom window.

Color v Monochrome: The Poll of the Century

All right, I admit it is perhaps a slight exaggeration but hopefully it caught your attention. Let me explain… and there will be a poll at the end.

My recent post Monochrome Enchantment was inspired by a superb exhibition at the Andrew Smith Gallery in Santa Fe of the works of Ansel Adams.  Landscape photography never looked more breathtaking and I came away in awe of the drama and beauty of Ansel Adams’s black and white view of the world and a greater understanding as to why he is considered one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century. Bloggaversary

Machu Picchu

Today, May 19th, marks the One Year Anniversary of thechangingpalette.

Happy Birthday to me!

I started blogging one year ago as a complete novice with machupicchucountdownin preparation for our trek to Machu Picchu, the adventure of a lifetime .  With this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Work of Art, my recent painting of this archeological wonder seems to be the perfect way to celebrate the occasion.

Thank you to WordPress who make it all possible, to the great people at The Daily Post who have made me a better blogger (I hope), and to all of you who have been gracious enough to follow me on my journey. Over the year I have met so many of you in the blogosphere and have enjoyed your company as we have travelled together to distant lands and shared new adventures.

I look forward to Year Two of the thechangingpalette and very much hope that you will continue to join me on my journey.  With best wishes…Andrew
