Vancouver

spring forward fall back

20.4.16 i

Today was a beautiful Spring day for a walk along one of our favourite city trails here in Vancouver,  the Admiralty Trail in the Pacific Spirit Park.  How different were the colours today, a wonderful array of greens and umbers, compared to the rich reds and yellows of the Fall, which you will have seen last October in my post for the  Weekly Photo Challenge: Boundaries. Take a moment to look back yourselves and compare; I think you’ll find it’s worth it.

The opening photo I took today of the ferns reflected in a small pool is one of my favourites for a long time and looks to me like a painting in the making.  Stay tuned.

Kits Perfect

Last night’s sunset over English Bay was another one of those special moments that makes Kitsilano Beach such a special place to be on a warm spring evening here in Vancouver. You may recall a not too dissimilar image from August 2014 for the Weekly Photo Challenge: Silhouette.

Aquabus vi

With a thank you to Cheri one final post for the last day of this week’s Photo Challenge as we catch the Aquabus back to Granville Island and head on home. Here you have a better view of the third bridge that crosses False Creek, the Cambie Street Bridge, and in the distance below the span you can just make out the geodesic dome of Science World from where we have just walked and from where yesterday’s panorama was taken.

Before we leave one final view of Burrard Bridge where these last seven days of landscape photos began last Friday. I hope you have enjoyed the views as much as we did on our walk last weekend. Thanks for joining us.

BC Place ii

After leaving Granville Island our weekend walk took us to the east end of False Creek from where when you look back you can see the residences of Olympic Village on the south side built for the 2010 games, the Cambie Street Bridge way in the distance, and BC Place Stadium on the north side. This panorama shot was taken from the deck outside the geodesic dome of Vancouver’s Science World that opened for the World Fair in 1986 (Expo 86). As you can see the pedestrian and cycle pathway takes you around the creek and then carries on to Stanley Park so all can enjoy one of the world’s most accessible, varied and so often stunning urban landscapes.

We’ve arrived at Granville Island on our weekend walk and here below the Granville Street Bridge you can see the Aquabus water taxis waiting to take you up and down False Creek. The photobombing seagull was a complete surprise however and clearly felt the landscape wouldn’t be complete without him. Serendipity at work once again.

Check out the great Granville Island website and learn all about one of Vancouver’s jewels.

Our walk now takes us under Burrard Bridge and past the fishing boats and sail boats moored in False Creek as we make our way towards Granville Island situated under the Granville Street Bridge, with the high rises of downtown Vancouver seen across the water.  The yellow building in the centre is a popular Vancouver restaurant appropriately called Bridges. And so within a few short steps the landscape has changed again.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Seasons

Thanks to Jen’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Seasons, yesterday we visited Vancouver’s beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park and captured, in a few snapshots, a sunny Saturday afternoon in one of our city’s special places.

Queen Elizabeth Park, Vancouver

The open crocuses, rhododendrons and snowdrops, a wedding in the sunshine, children playing peek-a-boo around the Henry Moore sculpture and dancing in front of the fountains, the tulips and daffodils getting ready to burst through, a leisurely cyclist, and all against the backdrop of the city, blue sky and cumulus clouds – I hope your spirits are as uplifted as ours were.

I’ll be back when the flowers are in bloom to share the glorious array of colours that await.

Thanks Jen.

Remembering…

Remembering David Bowie with this morning’s sunrise over English Bay in Vancouver
that was pure magic, as was he.

Spanish Banks and the Vancouver Skyline 29.12.15

Back from a wonderful Xmas with family in Los Angeles to enjoy Vancouver at its best today, and this first for me, a rider and his horse on Spanish Banks against the shimmering skyline of the city.

Only two more days to go and just two more months to look back on.

November: After attending the 91st Annual Remembrance Day Service in Victory Square, Vancouver on November 11th…

Day 314

…two days later another day of horror and tragedy in Paris was added to an ever-growing list of days to remember, and Je suis Charlie became Je suis Paris

Day 318 ii

After our never-to-be-forgotten visit to La Belle France in October with dear friends studio-time painting the beautiful places we visited took on a new meaning during November and became a way of showing solidarity with the people of France who made our visit so memorable. This slideshow brings together those paintings, some of which will be familiar to you after yesterdays photos of all the places we visited. I have also included a couple from our visit to London where we began our journey.

One final painting from the end of the month for Day 330 and another favourite for obvious reasons, my father’s tools some of which I had been using to create my representations of the Cave of Lascaux.
