The Treasured Feather

I suspect those of you who have been following our travels for the past ten days will not be surprised to see that this feather from a Great Horned Owl, the treasure of our journey, is today’s featured image now that we are back home. Our visit to Owl Canyon where we saw the owls sitting high above looking down at us from the red rock, was one of the most memorable moments of the trip.

So here we are home again after ten memorable days filled with sights and sounds that had all of our senses tingling with excitement and anticipation each day. The studio is as I left it as you can see, except for two treasured additions to the picture. Can you spot them?

For Day 117 I thought I would post a few of our favorite moments from the trip, and yours I might add, to enjoy one more time and reflect on how fortunate and privileged we have felt, particularly at a time when others across the world are struggling to cope with so much devastation around them. We live in such a beautiful and yet often so cruel a natural world.

Thanks for joining us on our journey, which I hope you have all enjoyed vicariously, as much as we have enjoyed sharing it with you each day.

Man in Motion

Last night we enjoyed a sublime evening of music at the Smith Centre for the Performing Arts here in Las Vegas. The added pleasure was watching Maestro Cabrera painting the music in the air with his baton, thrusting, smoothing, coaxing as he directed the Las Vegas Philharmonic in exhilarating performances of John Adams’ The Chairman Dances, Foxtrot for Orchestra and Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony.

The concert was made even more memorable by the guest soloist, the brilliant pianist Joyce Yang, winner of the Silver Medal at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2005, playing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Her exquisite performance brought us all to our feet, applauding, cheering and shouting Bravo, Bravo, adding to a night full of both motion and emotion. In the pre-concert discussion with the audience she gave away the secret to her genius: fifteen to twenty hours of practice to learn one minute of music.

After the concert was over Miss Yang greeted everyone in the foyer and graciously signed our CD’s. Two more treasures to take home tonight after ten spectacular days, as we say our farewells to family and return to Vancouver.

Red Rock Canyon

Las Vegas is not just about the Strip. Forty minutes away is spectacular Red Rock Canyon to add to Antelope and Bryce, making this week definately a three canyon adventure.

We have just returned from a concert in the Smith Centre for the Performing Arts, of which more tomorrow to do justice to a wonderful evening of music.

From the never-to-be forgotten canyons of Utah and Arizona to the high desert of Nevada and Las Vegas for a weekend visiting family before returning to Vancouver.

These palm trees bending and swaying in the warm desert wind seen during our rest stop in Mesquite seemed the perfect representation for this week’s Photo Challenge: Motion

The Navajo Loop Trail from Sunset point descending into the Bryce Canyon Amphitheatre.

The perfect finish to our visit to Bryce Canyon hiking the Navajo Trail into the Amphitheatre, connecting with the Queens Garden Trail and returning to the canyon rim at Sunrise Point. Look for Queen Victoria in the photo gallery.

One final view before leaving this precious jewel of a place and a thank you to the National Park Service for maintaining it so perfectly for us all to enjoy.

En route from Page to Bryce Canyon we took the Toadstool Trail at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument 19 miles after crossing the Arizona Utah border…

…then on to Bryce Canyon and a stunning prelude with views of Red Canyon.

A treasure in Owl Canyon

Who would have thought it could get any better, but today was another magical day with unforgettable visits to Owl, Rattlesnake and Upper Antelope Canyons. Here are a selection of more amazing images to share with you, and many thanks for all your comments and visits.

The feather from a great horned owl from our visit to Owl Canyon will indeed be the treasure of the trip. It will take pride of place in the studio back home and I can’t wait to use it for more pen and ink drawings. I did ask our Navajo guide Kim, from Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours, if I could keep the feather and she very graciously gave her permission. Thank you Kim for a day we will never forget.
