weekly photo challenge

a Hitchcock moment

As I arrived home on the weekend I was greeted by a cacophony of sound the intensity of which I hadn’t heard before. There, high in the trees behind our house, against the odds, was an eagle tearing apart a crow that it had just caught, surrounded by an angry army of the bird’s extended family. Those of you who have seen Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds will relate to the scene I witnessed, spellbound I might add, with other neighbours in the street.

How different from the Birdsong I posted just a week or two ago.

If you have never seen Hitchcock’s film here is the 1963 trailer:

You may never look at birds the same way again – be warned.

Visiting the Seattle Art Museum today the shadow from this polished stainless steel sculpture by the American artist David Smith (1906-1965) was as dramatic as the piece itself.

The title for the post is taken from this quote accompanying the work:

escape with me

I have a treat for you today. Come and join me on my morning walk yesterday and escape for a few minutes from the hate, the anger, the despair, and the noise that we are all being pummelled with each and every day. I don’t know about you but my troubled soul needed a little healing and when the sun rose yesterday on freshly fallen snow with the mountains stark against the bluest of skies, I knew all I had to do was dress warmly, put on my boots and venture out into the crisp air and morning sunshine.  I’m happy to say it worked.

It didn’t take long to enjoy every magical moment with everyone else who was out and about.

This gallery, which I have also made into a slide show, I hope will help sooth your soul too.

As I came closer to the trees  in Vanier Park I was greeted by a symphony of sound that made me stop in my tracks and listen for several minutes, joined by others who were equally as enthralled.  Here is a short excerpt from my post entitled Birdsong for today’s Daily Prompt: Heard.  If you feel like pausing for a minute or two and hearing more visit the post and listen to it all.

I hope this has made your day as much as it did mine.

The Marked Man – a repurposed drawing from 1971.

Writing for Quartz on January 31st Jenny Anderson wrote an article entitled The psychology of why 94 deaths from terrorism are scarier than 301,797 deaths from guns.  In it she references a paper by Linda Qui writing for Politifact in 2015 entitled Fact-checking a comparison of gun deaths and terrorism deaths  in which Ms Qui quotes figures gleaned from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Vital Statistics System.  Looking at all deaths on US soil between 2005 and 2015, 71 were due to extremists attacks and the majority of 301,797 due to home grown gun violence.

The President of the United States wishes to make America safe by instituting an immigration process that will require extreme vetting for those seeking refuge for lives that have been shattered and broken by war and terror.

Looking at the figures quoted in the papers by Ms. Anderson and Ms. Qui one can only conclude that the only place for extreme vetting to make America safe is to vet those seeking to obtain weapons for their own personal use and which end up killing their fellow citizens in numbers that are simply staggering.

The President should be welcoming refugees to his country in the spirit so clearly spelled out in the words on the Statue of Liberty, and as a priority look to solve those home grown crimes of violence that are clearly due to a failure of gun control and for which he is now responsible.

On a clear, crisp Saturday yesterday, this was a rare site in Vancouver’s Vanier Park, which definitely uplifted our mood as we walked by in the afternoon sunshine. But to fully appreciate the joy of the scene the sounds that accompany it and heard in the following brief video will complete the picture.

Cookie Monster starts with C, being photobombed here by Grover, and not forgetting Bert and Ernie, all names that cannot help but make you smile. They certainly did for our beautiful granddaughter after Xmas.
