“Had it not been for painters…”

Fifteen Planes, 1957-8

Visiting the Seattle Art Museum today the shadow from this polished stainless steel sculpture by the American artist David Smith (1906-1965) was as dramatic as the piece itself.

The title for the post is taken from this quote accompanying the work:

  1. beautiful elegant shapes that the shadow play emphasized brilliantly!
    I agree with the quote, painters do create and make marvellous sculptures. I hope, that the galleries, in the system will actually stop telling artists to “narrow in” on one area. That they see that with liberty, comes great contributions. Thank You Andrew for sharing.
