Weekly Photo Challenge: Admiration

Ladder 3 i

Ladder 3 – 9/11 Memorial Museum, New York

Seeing the crushed remains of Ladder 3 at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York on our moving visit to the museum last year one could not help but feel an overwhelming sense of admiration and gratitude for the sacrifice and bravery of those 343 firefighters of the New York City Fire Department who were lost that day together with an additional 68 emergency workers and the 2566 innocent lives they were trying to save.

This quote from Virgil is displayed in the hall of the Museum.

good night sweet Prince

sweet Prince

Today, on the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, these words spoken by Horatio at the end of the final scene of Hamlet seem so poignant and could easily have been written for another sweet Prince whom the angels are now singing sweetly to his rest.

Snapshots and Solidarity

Discover Challenge: Snapshots: Tell a broad story using a series of short, focused scenes.

For this week’s Discover Challenge Michelle invites those of us who are visual artists to “share a series of photos or sketches that focus on different details of a larger scene and to “Take us on a journey, one small scene at a time.” These few sketches were made one innocent warm summer’s day watching a majestic heron slowly wading through the shallow waters of the shore line of English Bay, Vancouver. Today however, a day that is anything but innocent, my thoughts are very much with the people of Belgium.

Remembering…

Remembering David Bowie with this morning’s sunrise over English Bay in Vancouver
that was pure magic, as was he.

Day 353 iii

February: New York, New York was definitely the highlight of the month. After our disappointment at having to cancel because of the weather in January we made a last minute decision to have a long weekend and took the red eye flight on the evening of Thursday the 6th. We arrived in New York early the next morning and didn’t stop for three days, taking in the Matisse Cut-Out exhibition at MOMA on Friday, the 9/11 Memorial site and Museum on Saturday, and the Metropolitan Museum on Sunday. The Freedom Tower overlooking the Memorial site was a powerful image that I tried to capture in the studio on our return.  I wrote that it seemed to represent not only freedom but so much more: defiance, resilience, endurance, hope and above all remembrance.

Day 44 iv

On the 18th I posted about our visit to MOMA which I cheekily entitled MOMA Mia. If you haven’t seen it take a look as you might enjoy the slide show of some of my favourite pieces in the museum.  I also posted a slide show of our afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum entitled Well Met on the 20th; cheesy titles I know.

Day 355     Day 50 iii

The month also include collages and my early attempts at light painting photography, which definitely improved as the year continued.

Dad’s Tools I 26.11.15

A little explanation for today’s image.  Yesterday whilst working on Lascaux II using my late dad’s chisel shaping and carving the plaster, I felt that his tools, which I have been using for so many years with much love and remembrance, deserved a feature of their own for they have a real beauty, and share a wonderful history going back many decades.

Studio 365: Day 319

Day 319

I wrote, on Studio 365: Day 11 after the massacre at Charlie Hebdo, how I fell in love with Paris on my first visit there as a young boy in August 1962. I posted a drawing I had made sitting in the Tuileries Garden on a beautiful summer’s Day. Now, here I am on Day 319 once again expressing solidarity and sympathy through the best way I know how with all those mourning today in Paris, in France and around the world. The drawing from that same never-to-be-forgotten visit in 1962 is of one of bridges over the Seine, when one of the most beautiful cities in the world inspired a young boy who has felt that inspiration ever since.  Je suis Paris.

Day 317 iii

My thoughts are with friends in Paris and France tonight and my deepest sympathy and condolences to the families and friends of all those who lost their lives on this, another dark day for humanity.
