victims in their own country

Portland, USA, July 2020.

“Victims in their own country of state sponsored violence…

…And someday, when we do finish that long journey toward freedom; when we do form a more perfect union – whether it’s years from now, or decades, or even if it takes another two centuries – John Lewis will be a founding father of that fuller, fairer, better America…

…where real courage comes from. Not from turning on each other, but by turning towards one another. Not by sowing hatred and division, but by spreading love and truth. Not by avoiding our responsibilities to create a better America and a better world, but by embracing those responsibilities with joy and perseverance and discovering that in our beloved community, we do not walk alone.”

Words from President Barrack Obama’s inspiring eulogy and call to action today at the moving funeral for the late Congressman John Lewis.

bridging history

Seeing the body of the late John Lewis crossing this bridge for the last time yesterday was a moment that seemed to capture a nation at a crossroads, with the hope that the bridge will be renamed after him, a true national hero and the conscience not only of the Congress but of the whole country.

Dedicated to his memory.

a goddess for our times

Athena, the Greek Goddess, was the patron and protectress of cities across ancient Greece, particularly Athens, from which she received her name. No wonder this heroic young woman who stood defiantly in front of those cowardly unmarked troops in Portland three days ago has been named the Portland Athena. She is a Goddess for our times and a true inspiration

The Last 100 Days

Our world has changed so much over the past three months. This mini retrospective of some of my drawings and paintings, attempting to reflect the tumultuous times we have been living through, show moments of gratitude, heroism, loss, remembrance, inspiration, and protest. Let us hope that at the end of the next 100 days we can all be looking forward to the change that is so desperately needed, as we remember John Lewis and Rev. CT Vivian, two icons of the Civil Rights movement who died on 17th July.

Five years ago today I posted a similar retrospective of the then previous 100 days in the studio. My paintings reflected a very different world for me as you will see if you visit Studio 365: Day 200

salute to a hero

“It’s been an absolutely magnificent day for me,” said Capt Sir Tom Moore after being knighted by the Queen at Windsor Castle today. I think it was a magnificent day for everyone Sir Tom. Congratulations on an honour so richly deserved.
