in remembrance
In memory of one of Canada’s greatest Olympians. Like so many of us I remember the excitement and pride watching Kathleen Heddle, together with her rowing partner Marnie McBean, capturing two gold medals for Canada at the Summer Olympic Games of 1992 in Barcelona and a further gold medal in Atlanta in 1996. Yesterday we learnt the sad news of her passing at the age of 55 after a long battle with cancer. I send my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. Her beautiful memory is in all of our thoughts today. 🇨🇦

Today I received my mask from Physicians for Human Rights, which I will now wear whenever I am out to honour my dear colleagues and all of our Health Care Heroes, and as always I thank them all. Although to say thank you never seems quite enough it comes from the heart.

As the sun set in the woods at the end of this week of weeks, the words of Dylan Thomas came to mind: “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” No doubt that rage that I know so many of us feel will undoubtedly continue until the traitorous tyrant is removed and held to account.
