Happy Birthday Ma’am
On March 16th 1973 Her Majesty the Queen opened the new London Bridge just round the corner from Guy’s Hospital where I was working at the time. With my new Pentax Spotmatic at the ready off I went and was able to capture some memorable moments from the day.
The negatives have been protected in their plastic sleeves over all these years and today seemed the perfect time to revisit them. They’ve stood the test of time pretty well.
I even discovered online today a British Movietone newsreel of the day, which is wonderful archive worth taking a look at.

Today was a beautiful Spring day for a walk along one of our favourite city trails here in Vancouver, the Admiralty Trail in the Pacific Spirit Park. How different were the colours today, a wonderful array of greens and umbers, compared to the rich reds and yellows of the Fall, which you will have seen last October in my post for the Weekly Photo Challenge: Boundaries. Take a moment to look back yourselves and compare; I think you’ll find it’s worth it.

For this week’s Discover Challenge Krista asks us to “get inspired by illustrated journalling”.
From time to time in my blog I have dipped into one of my prize possessions, an illustrated journal I kept throughout our travels in Italy and Greece during 1999 and 2000.
I thought for the challenge I would use four of its pages as examples of pen, ink and water-colour notations that I made each evening to record certain moments and scenes that I had found particularly memorable that day:
The laundry hanging out of the window of the youth hostel at Castello Wuillerman where we stayed in Finale Ligure…
Some of Giotto’s exquisite fresco figures in the magnificent Scrovegni Chapel in Padua…
The intricate patterns of the mosaic floors of Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice, which you may remember inspired a painting on Day 163 last year…

With a thank you to Cheri one final post for the last day of this week’s Photo Challenge as we catch the Aquabus back to Granville Island and head on home. Here you have a better view of the third bridge that crosses False Creek, the Cambie Street Bridge, and in the distance below the span you can just make out the geodesic dome of Science World from where we have just walked and from where yesterday’s panorama was taken.
Before we leave one final view of Burrard Bridge where these last seven days of landscape photos began last Friday. I hope you have enjoyed the views as much as we did on our walk last weekend. Thanks for joining us.
