The unbearable agony of a mother about to have her baby torn from her arms in this detail from the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The image has haunted me ever since I saw it on our visit to the chapel nearly twenty years ago. It was painted by Giotto di Bondone and is as relevant today as when he painted it over seven hundred years ago.

Visited an old painting of mine today, my interpretation of the original logo of the UBC Health Sciences Centre Hospital in Vancouver and painted in my basement in 1987. The Hospital is now part of Vancouver Coastal Health but happy to see the painting looks as fresh today as the day it was finished.

I have interpreted this week’s Photo Challenge: Awakening the best way I know how by sharing the joy of spending time in the studio last weekend with my beautiful, creative granddaughter who shows us all so perfectly how a box of paints, a few brushes, paper and a little water can awaken the artist in all of us.
