Today’s painting was inspired by seeing those close up images of the sun released today by NASA captured by the agency’s Solar Orbiter.
Our Lavendes de Provence for Le Quatorze Juillet, and an opportunity to repost the Lavender Story from 3 years ago when our lavender was just as beautiful as it is today.
From Yardwork to Artwork: the Lavender Story – 17th July 2017
Our Lavender Provencal is spectacular this year.
This bouquet picked today is filling the house with its wonderful aroma…
…but as you can see I couldn’t resist a stopover in the studio on the way.
After yesterday’s post, in a New York frame of mind today, and a look back to 2015:
Studio 365: Day 266 – September 23, 2015

City of the Imagination I – VIII 23.9.15
City of the Imagination began on Day 261 in response to this week’s Photo Challenge: Grid. Variations VII and VIII were posted yesterday for Day 265, so today I thought I would put all eight together as a final City of the Imagination grid. Look for more to come in the next day or two that will definitely now be off the grid.
Pacific Spirit Park – 8.7.20
Today’s watercolor was inspired by a photograph I took in the park four years ago and about which I wrote, “one of my favourites for a long time and looks to me like a painting in the making.”
So…better late than never. You can see the original photo together with a few more from one of our favourite trails here: spring forward fall back.Work in progress today, i.e. evolving
Seemed like a good idea to look back 4 years ago today to my post evolved from nothing
Chapter 7 in Tony Smibert’s Painting Landscapes from your Imagination is all about composition.
“Whether drawn as a crisp outline or sketchy…the result is the same:
a landscape which you evolved from nothing; and only a beginning to the possibilities”
This was certainly the case today particularly using the “Three Line Sketch”, which Tony describes as his “secret weapon…the ultimate planning tool for watercolour.”

One of those days when it felt good to hold a brush, use the colors left on the palette with different paper from the drawer, listen to the voice Sarah Bareilles, and mourn the loss of the wonderfully talented Canadian Broadway actor Nick Cordero from Hamilton to whom this post is dedicated as I send heartfelt condolences to his beautiful family.🇨🇦
