Homage to Leonardo

Vitruvian Man and Woman

On the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci who died on May 2nd 1519.

“If you set your legs so far apart as to take a fourteenth part from your height, and you open and raise your arms until you touch the line of the crown of the head with your middle fingers, you must know that the centre of the circle formed by the extremities of the out-stretched limbs will be the navel, and the space between the legs will form an equilateral triangle”

on Human Proportions from the Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci

“The age as it flies glides secretly and deceives one and another; nothing is more fleeting than the years, but he who sows virtue reaps honour”

on Phlosophy from the Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci

a dedication

In posting this beautiful bouquet of the tulips, which we brought back from the Chilliwack Tulip Festival on Friday, my thoughts are with the family and friends of Lori Kaye who was murdered in the Poway Synagogue on Saturday and to whose memory they are dedicated.

Always a special day visiting the annual Chilliwack Tulip Festival in the Fraser Vally.

Earth Day 2019

This landscape painted over thirty years ago has stood the test of time I think.
Let’s all work to make sure our planet does the same.

light in the darkness

Yesterday I took this picture of one of our beautiful camellia’s illuminated by the afternoon sun. Today I was going to post it for a happy Easter Sunday but now it evokes a very different emotion with the news from Sri Lanka this morning. I post it now with a heavy heart and send heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all those suffering so far away but yet so close, and hope that its beauty will help ease the pain of yet another dark day.

Notre Dame

I posted my painting of Notre Dame in November 2015 under the title Je Suis Paris in response to the terrorist attacks that had taken place in Paris on the 13th of November that year.

Today, seeing the sorrowful scenes from Paris of this iconic, majestic landmark engulfed in flames, a landmark that means so much to so many not only in Paris and France but around the world, Je Suis Paris once again.

a moment of reflection

Amidst the tranquil beauty of the Nitobe Memorial Garden on the University of British Columbia campus this morning this moment of reflection made my day,
hopefully it will make yours too.

Vimy Ridge Day 2019, commemorating the 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded members of the Canadian Corps at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in Northern France from April 9th to 12th, 1917, with photos from our moving visit to the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Vimy in 2012. 🇨🇦

that moment when

you have to pause and simply marvel at the magic before you

Last night I was reading on the sofa and looked up to see these silouettes on my windowsill appear against the sky of a glorious sunset. A magical moment that needed to be savoured and recorded until the setting sun was gone and the magic was over.
