it’s been a good day

It has been a good day today: Black Lives Matter painted on 5th Avenue outside Trump Tower in New York; 7 to 2 at the US Supreme Court confirming that no one is above the law. Light is definitely breaking through all the darkness.

pacific spirit reflections

Pacific Spirit Park –  8.7.20

Today’s watercolor was inspired by a photograph I took in the park four years ago and about which I wrote, “one of my favourites for a long time and looks to me like a painting in the making.”

So…better late than never. You can see the original photo together with a few more from one of our favourite trails here: spring forward fall back.

evolving

Work in progress today, i.e. evolving

Seemed like a good idea to look back 4 years ago today to my post evolved from nothing

Chapter 7 in Tony Smibert’s Painting Landscapes from your Imagination is all about composition.

“Whether drawn as a crisp outline or sketchy…the result is the same:
a landscape which you evolved from nothing; and only a beginning to the possibilities”

This was certainly the case today particularly using the “Three Line Sketch”, which Tony describes as his “secret weapon…the ultimate planning tool for watercolour.”

reflections on the 4th of July

Pacific Spirit Park reflections today and some reflections on the 4th of July.

On today’s Independence Day for dear family and friends across the border I clearly need to educate myself more about their history this 4th of July, particularly after watching last night’s demonstration on Mt Rushmore and seeing the film of the stage show Hamilton last night. Saying “Happy Fourth of July” this year can only be said in the context of hoping for the change that’s needed in the year ahead.

canadart

What better way to spend Canada Day than painting in the studio with our Vancouver granddaughter. How lucky can anyone be to have two beautiful granddaughters who love to paint with their doting grandpa.❤️

Canada Day 2020

On this Canada Day we remember Abbigail Cowbrough and her five co-members of the Canadian Armed Forces who went down with their helicopter off the coast of Greece in April.

We also remember Emily Tuck murdered with so many others on that fateful day in Nova Scotia.

And of course we remember all those whose lives have been taken from us by Covid19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

But as we mourn them all this Canada Day we also say thank you, as we do every day, to all of our frontline heroes who have been there for us since the beginning. It is a Happy Canada Day for so many thanks to each and every one of them.

almost home

Almost home after wonderful family time away and already looking forward to our next return visit. Can’t help but reflect on how lucky we are to have the health care leadership we have here in British Columbia that has made it possible, together with all those health care heroes that have been on the frontline for us all throughout. My heartfelt thanks to them all.🇨🇦

love, love, love

Always the best part of any visit is painting with the artist in residence and today’s rainbow couldn’t have been a better subject to paint.
