Drawing in the studio today allowed me to spend a few hours in quiet reflection on this National Day Of Mourning, a day that perhaps has never been more meaningful, as we remember and honor those who have lost their lives or been injured from their time in the workplace.
I would particularly like to honor the memory of Dr. Lorna Breen, a New York City emergency room doctor, a true hero, and send heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues and friends.
The drawing was inspired by a photograph taken by Marco Bertorello in the Covid-19 ward of Maria Pia Hospital in Turin.

My husband and I wept uncontrollably when we heard the news of Dr Breen’s tragic death. You have tirelessly reminded us of the medical and frontline workers and the dangers they daily face. I thought I understood the terrible stress they are enduring. And then the news of Dr Lorna Breen. Of all the tragedies, of all the endless vignettes of bravery and perseverance in the most diabolic conditions, her death by her own hand seems to me to be the tragic emblem of this whole dreadful saga.

Nothing highlights the pressure, the risk and the bravery more of all these true heroes than the death of Dr. Breen. It was one of the saddest moments amongst so many every day. If only she had asked for help. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us all.
